Sally Baldwin
Wells Art Contemporary
In 2022 and 2024 Sally's installation proposals were selected to be shown in Wells Cathedral as part of Wells Art Contemporary
Her proposal for 2024 was called 'Disasters of War'. Whereas Goya's prints of the same name referenced the atrocities of the Spanish wars against France in the early 1800's, her installation refers to the suffering of women and children in all wars
The piece is made of stitched paper embellished with flower motifs. The colour suggests mourning and loss whilst the flowers may be seen as a reference to the poppy motif or as a symbol of life cut off in full bloom.
The site proposed was in the North Transept opposite the Crucifixion sculpture. The suffering and sacrifice of women and children in war mirror that of Christ's on the Cross
Her proposal for WAC '22 was a 'Lost Flowers' coat, with a long train and a hood. It was positioned on a mannequin at the top of the 700 year old limestone staircase leading up to the Chapter House. Whilst referencing the loss of indigenous flowers due to climate change it also evoked the ghosts of all those who had ascended the staircase over the centuries and thus the transience of all life
